Your tooth enamel gets the strength needed to chew and grind hard foods from a dense matrix of microscopic mineral crystals. When acidic foods and beverages and the natural bacteria in your mouth manage to erode these minerals, it can weaken your tooth enamel. In time, it can even create microscopic channels in your tooth enamel, leading to sensitivity issues when you consume hot, cold, sweet or acidic products.

Exposing your teeth to fluoride restores the density of these microscopic minerals. If your teeth suffer from significant demineralization, your dentist, Dr. Angela Osborn, might recommend having a fluoride treatment after your regular dental checkup.

During the treatment, the concentrated fluoride will be poured into special trays that are inserted into your mouth and held there for a few minutes. You will need to avoid eating and drinking for up to an hour to maximize the fluoride saturation in your tooth enamel.

If you’ve been struggling with significant tooth sensitivity issues, or if your teeth show severe signs of demineralization, we might also prescribe fluoride supplements. It might also be a good idea to cut back on consuming acidic foods and beverages.

If you’ve been struggling with tooth sensitivity issues, you should call Angela M. Osborn, DDS, PC at 303-799-9993 to ask about the benefits of a fluoride treatment in Lone Tree, Colorado.
