What is gum recession?

Gum recession is the loss of gum tissue along the gum line and subsequent exposure of the roots of teeth. It can occur as a result of periodontal (gum) disease, the natural aging process, or inadequate or overaggressive brushing and flossing. Common signs of gum recession include overly sensitive teeth and tooth mobility, and some teeth may appear longer than others. Gum recession can often cause significant problems to your dental health when left untreated.

Why should gum recession be taken seriously?

When gum recession occurs, the roots of the teeth become exposed. This permits tooth decay and other problems to affect the teeth along and below the gum line. If left untreated, the supporting tissue and bone structures of teeth can be severely damaged, sometimes resulting in loss of teeth. Healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, so receiving treatment for gum recession is an important part of dental wellness.

What is Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)?

The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is incision, suture, and graft free. All of the tools and techniques used to perform the Chao Pinehole® Surgical Technique were created by Dr. John Chao, who trained our dentist.

How does PST differ from traditional gum grafting?

PST differs from traditional gum grafting in that it does not require any tissue grafts, incisions, sutures, scalpels, or invasive surgical tools. Traditional gum recession treatments involve the use of donor tissue or soft tissue grafts, typically taken from the patient’s palate, to rebuild the gum line. This soft tissue is sutured in place to join with existing gum tissue as it heals. While traditional grafting continues to be an effective treatment, PST provides comparable results and an overall better patient experience.

How is PST performed?

PST is performed by using a needle to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this “pinhole,” special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools then help to expand the gum line enough that it slides to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, sutures, or incisions needed. It simply adjusts the existing tissue to protect areas previously exposed through gum recession.

What are the benefits of PST?

Benefits of PST include less patient discomfort following treatment, a faster recovery time than traditional grafting, no sutures, no scalpels or invasive surgical tools, and no need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate. Best of all, PST provides excellent, long-lasting results with a natural appearance.
